Academics

To enhance learning opportunities for all children by recognising each child’s unique individuality, academic, social and cultural strengths and interests.

The curriculum at St. John’s is challenging and inviting. The course of study is very substantive, keeping even the youngest students engaged.

Students master material which they will need for later school as well as later life. St. John’s emphasizes educational excellence along with values such as honor, justice, compassion, and service. Our goal is not only to produce great students, but also to enrich children’s lives, to help them to become good citizens, and to prepare them to be the leaders of tomorrow.

The CARDEN METHOD® is a vital educational philosophy with proven teaching techniques applied to a curriculum concerned with the development of the whole child. The Carden curriculum begins with three-year-old children and continues through 8th grade, each level reinforcing and building upon the strengths gained by the students during the previous year.

Using a highly individualized approach, Carden meets each learner’s particular needs. Children receive the sound, well-rounded education they need to realize their full potential in life. Carden believes that life is a joy, and so should be learning. This attitude promotes a life-long love of learning among St. John’s Episcopal School students.

The Carden curriculum includes language arts, mathematics, history, science, and geography. A cultural program engenders appreciation of art and music. A technology program affords participation for every student. A guidance program develops the student by awakening each child to ethical and social values. Students have excellent classes in reading, grammar and composition, math, science, social studies, Spanish, computer lab, and physical education, vocal music, and band.

Students excel in all academic subjects. For example, all students are expected to read at least two years above grade level and to score at least two years above grade level in math and other subjects. Advanced grammar, composition, and math begin in fourth grade.

The love of learning and the pursuit of excellence come alive at St. John’s!
